Resolution of an image

The number of dots in a square inch, or ‘pixel density’, is commonly referred to as an image’s, ‘resolution’. Printing demands images to be 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) or higher (higher is better), this means that for an A4 page designers need to assemble over 9 million dots! Dots are also known as points, or pixels.

Lots of space in a print is taken up by text (which has it’s own point size) and whitespace.
Images, photos and graphics, are the most exciting way to use space on paper.

What looks good on your screen (computer, phone, tablet or other) will not necessarily look good in print. Screens only demand 72dpi (or ppi, to be proper), this means that a picture which looks A4 size on your screen, will only be ¼ of the size when printed.

Never send a screenshot/screengrab to be printed.

All images are made up of pixels

Image file sizes on your device

Much like how you are reading this block of text now, images are stored on computers dot by dot starting at the top left, and reading down to the bottom right. Each ‘dot’ contains a colour value, in quantities of red, blue, and green (like mixing paint); and a light value, how bright or dark it should be when printed. This information is stored in megabytes on your device, bigger images take up more megabytes.

No File is too big for us to use! If you have a big image to print, just send it in.

Image file types

Print designers like .pdf, .jpeg/jpg, or .tiff files. If you have something else which works, call for advice. Think of the file format like a container for the image. Send any photos or graphics to us as attachments in your email directly. You do not need to place/embed images into your word processor before sending them (save yourself some time!).

Beware, .gif, .png, .webp are designed for use on the internet and not in print.

Good quality images

Test the size of your image against the following criteria:

  • Looks: if it looks like a mosaic, has a grid, or looks blurry, it’s inappropriate for printing (unless, of course, it’s a picture of a mosaic, a grid or a blurry friend).
  • Pixels: usually width x height; for example, 2551 x 3579 (an A4 page). Bigger numbers are always better.
  • Filesize: a plain white A4 page still needs at least 17.4mb to be stored on a computer. the size of the image on the device is a telling reveal, if the filesize is too small, the resolution is most likely too small.

What if my image is too big?

No problem! We can make images smaller for you. This is good, it actually increases the pixel density (resolution) when we do this.

What if my image is too small/blocky/blurry?

We cannot make small images bigger, pixelated images less blocky, or blurry images more sharp. This is down to the image captured at the source (usually a photographer). Consider how squinting makes it harder to see, if you miss an important detail because you were unable to see clearly, you cannot remember the details clearly later on, having not seen them clearly before.

If you know that a bigger/better version of your image exists, it is worth finding it to send in for print.

Beware, some software will offer to ‘compress’ your images. Always say ‘no’ to compression, it will rob us of those precious pixels.
